Thank you. Again.
I’ve been completely overwhelmed by the volume and intensity of support many of you have expressed regarding this newsletter.
Now all I have to worry about is living up to it.
Thank you!

Horticulture second “most useless” degree?
Well I sure as heck don’t think so, but that’s what Newsweek said. Read Lawn & Landscape magazine’s thoughtful take on the issue here. (Brett Lemke, VP at Rochester’s RM Landscape, is quoted.)
Scientests study delayed fall foliage
It’s fairly widely accepted that global warming has brought about earlier springs, but its effect on autumnal color and leaf drop is debated. Story here.
Square a new, mobile credit card option
I first saw a Square credit card device at the Greentopia Festival in Rochester, as I was buying a recycled ipad bag from EvenOdd Creative (because I’m such a hipster). This tiny little thing plugs into an iPhone, iPad or Android device and allows you to swipe a card anywhere. Even better: the rate is only 2.75% (if you enter the numbers manually, like you would with a telephone order, the cost is 3.5% + $.15 per transaction). There is no monthly fee. That’s it. The money is automatically deposited in your account, and you can email the receipt directly to the customer. If you are a landscaper, a vendor at farmers’ markets, or anyone on the go, it’s a great option. Even I have switched, because even though I don’t need to take cards remotely too often, the rates are cheaper—a lot cheaper—than I had been paying. Plus the little gagety thing you plug into your iPhone is awfully cute.
Bellflower, Sweet Lilac hip colors for Spring 2012
Pantone has released its palette for spring—you can have a look at it here (or below). Of course, fashion is fleeting, so it’s silly to pay too much attention to these things, but if I were designing retail displays or deciding on what color bedding plants and containers to load up on, I’d at least want to have this knowledge in the back of my mind. Besides, it’s fun.
CNY landscapers revamp show
CNYBlooms, the Central New York State Nursery and Landscape Association’s annual show in Syracuse, is now CNY in Bloom, with an expanded focus on lifestyle and leisure. There is a completely new website, cnyinbloom.com, and show organizers are actively seeking new vendors and exhibitors. There are also speaker slots available; apply online.
