Tom Draves Patents Tree
Very cool, and boy am I glad I kept reading past the first paragraph on this one. Well-known WNY tree man Tom Draves, along with well-known Ohio tree man Tim Brotzman, has patented a new honeylocust, “Draves Thornless Honeylocust Tree.” It will be marketed as a street tree under the name “Street Keeper.”
Here’s the story: Plant Patents Drive Upstate Agriculture, from the D&C.

Erie County Pledges Dollars to Olmsted Parks Conservancy
I’m not quite clear on how this works. Erie County Exec Chris Collins has allocated 50K (pre-pledged) to the Conservancy “to help spruce up portions of the city in time for this month’s National Trust for Historic Preservation conference.” Seeing as the conference starts Oct. 19, I can only assume the Conservancy has already spent the money and this is all wacky bookeeping. Either that or they are planning on spending 5K of overtime every day from now until then. But I am unsophisticated when it comes to such things. Good for the Olmsted Conservancy!

New Dirr Available for Pre-Order
If you’re reading this, I don’t need to sell you on Michael Dirr’s anything. But in case you haven’t heard: His masterpiece, Dirr’s Encyclopedia of Trees & Shrubs, will be published by Timber Press at the end of the year at a list price of around $80 (hardback). You can pre-order it NOW, however, for just 50 bucks at Amazon. I have looked it over and it is a gorgeous updated version of the classic Manual of Woody Landscape Plants combined with Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs. So basically, a new version of Manual with beautiful, full-color images. Do you need it? Yes!
