Welcome to Ear to the Ground PRO

by Jane Milliman on October 4, 2011

What is it? Ear to the Ground PRO is a newsletter/future blog I’ve been wanting to launch for a couple of years. I’m an avid reader of the trades, and often find tidbits and stories I wish I could share with my industry peers. A ton of interesting, regionally-applicable information passes through the Upstate Gardeners’ Journal office every day, but we’re a consumer publication. So this great stuff just stagnates. I’d like to try to change that.

Newsletters will only be issued when there is actual news.  There is always news, turns out. Feel free to send some; bragging is encouraged (and job postings, reports from the field, etc.). In the future I’ll accept advertising. For now, I just want to get this out there.

Thank you for reading! If you like Ear to the Ground PRO, please recommend it to your friends, employees and colleagues.

Brian Goldbach of Buffalo’s Adams Nurseries is Green Profit‘s Young Retailer of the Year.
Very cool! Check out Green Profit editor Ellen Wells’s in-depth profile of him here.

NY State Insect Found on Long Island
Did you even know we had a state insect? Me neither. Nor that it had all but vanished. Good news: It’s back! (Thanks to RBJ for the link.)

Got School Spirit?
In this Grower Talks profile of their Young Grower of the Year, Illinois garden center owner Nancy Gambino, one particularly great idea stood out: hanging baskets and containers in local school colors. I’ve never thought of this or seen it anywhere, but I think that in my little town, they would be very hot sellers.

Green Drinks
Ever been to Green Drinks? Those who know me know that I seldom turn down…a chance to socialize, so I checked it out last month (it was a dual event, held in Elba, for both the Buffalo and the Rochester areas put on by The Upstate Green Business Network and the U. S. Green Building Council, Upstate New York Chapter) and it was a blast! Its focus is more on “building green” than on the green industry as we think of it, but if you are interested in living walls, green roofs, organic lawn care, etc., you might enjoy it. The mix of people is great and includes engineers and architects, landscapers and growers and alternative energy enthusiasts.

There will be a Green Drinks event in Syracuse at the Hotel Skyler, 601 South Crouse Avenue, on October 13 from 6 – 8:29 (?) pm.

This month’s Rochester area Green Drinks (traditionally the third Thursday) is going to be at Country Way Nursery, 2755 Penfield Rd. (Rte 441) Fairport, October 20, 2011 from 6 – 7:30.

If there is a Green Drinks this month in Buffalo I can’t find it; let me know.

In Ithaca the drinks are always green, so there’s no need for a special event. Kidding! They used to have them, but it looks like the last one was in April 2010.

Broccolo Featured in Lawn & Landscape Magazine
Speaking of Country Way, Laurie Broccolo, the owner of its parent company, Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care, was profiled in a piece in Lawn & Landscape last month. Congrats!

Clever Use of Facebook by Buffalo Law Firm
As desicribed in this article in Buffalo Business First, law firm HoganWillig LLP recently ran a promotion during which they had 50 lawyers answering questions posted on their facebook page for one full work week. Granted, advice from lawyers is typically a little more expensive than advice from green industry pros, but still it sparks all kinds of interesting “answerthon” ideas.
