There was a LOT going on this week. Very unseasonably warm weather, GardenScape, a giant corpse flower… Read on!
- Let’s start with GardenScape in Henrietta. The show looked really good, but the beautiful weather was not our friend. I did hear report that the attendees who did come seemed to be more serious about hiring a landscape company than is average, so that’s good for the contractors. Congratulations to the Twin Oaks/Oriental Garden Supply team for a really beautiful Best in Show display. Pictured below is a the moon gate from the installation—apparently it was pre-constructed and moved in on pallets—an awesome engineering feat. Oh! And Ballone Landscape won the UGJ award for excellence in labeling. Very nice.
- Every year, every show, there’s that “one” item. Michael Warren Thomas and I sit by the exit, so we see what goes out the door. This GardenScape, the Spear Head Spade. I thought it was going to be telescoping rakes; there were also a lot of those.
- YouGrowGirl.com‘s Gayla Trail paid the show a visit and snagged a ton of these 75-year-old seed packages from Crosman. Interesting and cool what an outsider will home in on. And I fell for the artists’ packs at the Hudson Valley Seed Library. Cute cute cute cute cute! The UGJ profiled the seed library, by the way, in a recent issue.
- Getting national (maybe even international) press this week was the much-anticipated and highly-observed blooming of the rare corpse plant, a.k.a. titan arum or Amorphophallus titanum, which gives off the stench of rotting meat. Believe it or not, that’s not the flower’s main appeal—it’s more the huge size.
- The War of 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden Trail is a newly-organized 200 mile stretch dotted with commemorative gardens in Canada and New York, and celebrating 200 years of peace between our two countries. Each garden is built and maintained by volunteers and is located at a historically significant site, for instance the Holland Land Office in Batavia, which is where the trail’s dedication will be, on May 5, 2012.
- Guess what else happens on May 5! Yes, it’s World Naked Gardening Day. Warning: link is NSFW and possibly scarring for life. You’re welcome.
- OK, so winter is over (as of today!) but check out these container ideas for next year.
- So pretty! I love stamps. The U. S. Postal Service is going to dedicate these beautiful stamps during the 100th annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D. C. Details are here.
- Oh! And don’t forget—Plantasia starts tomorrow night!
