- Presumably to help to combat some of the bad rap turf has been getting in recent years, the National Arboretum (Washington, D.C.) plans to a install an interactive turf exhibit to show off its uses, maintenance, and the like. From Lawn & Landscape magazine.
- UB Architect Laura Garofalo designed a garden, “Buoyant,” that has won a spot at The International Garden Festival in Quebec this summer. According to the Buffalo.edu News Center, “Her design features hydrogen-filled balloons that support a trellis that ebbs and flows with the wind, fluctuations in temperature and the slow leakage of the balloons. Vines emanate from “maintenance bundles” at the base of the suspended trellis and highlight how nature depends on the stewardship of the community that nurtures it.” Sounds like a good excuse for a road trip!
- Holy! The Brits mean business! Michael Warren Thomas sent me the link to this website, for UK company Japanese Knotweed Solutions, with a note about how the noxious weed has become such a problem over there, that it’s actually difficult to get homeowner’s insurance if you have an infestation. Will this happen here? What an interesting idea—a company that ONLY kills plants.
- Highline, GardenAerial, Walkway Over the Hudson, Tappan Zee? New York State is considering turning the the latter into a pedestrian bridge. (NYTimes.com)
- And here’s another good Times piece, about the almost freakishly early blooming in an experimental garden.
- Treehaven Evergreen Nursery, in Elma, is for sale. 40 acres, pond, gas lease. 716-652-4206.

- I’ve been wondering about this online Container Combo Design Tool from GardenCrossings.com. It’s common to create custom containers for customers, but to grow them to order? Curious if anyone locally does this, and how it works out.
- I read and enjoy ALL of the Ball Publishing e-newsletters. They’re very good. This issue of Acres Online, in particular, however, had me cackling at the end. Scroll all the way down to the bottom to “Customers Say the Darndest Things,” a short list compiled by the Connecticut Greenhouse Growers Association during a focus group. Here you’ll find classics like, “I don’t like Jupiter bushes. They smell like cat pee,” and “Fall is for Planting signs are always at Home Depot, but over a big display of bulbs.” We’re not laughing AT them, we’re just laughing.
- One last note: If you haven’t been to Hitch Lyman’s garden in Trumansburg (I haven’t), check out the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days there March 30 & April 1. You can visit the website, but there are a lot more details in the press release they sent about it, so I’ll post that on eartothegroundpro.com.
National Arboretum turf display; Knotweed in the UK; New walkway over Hudson?; Help wanted
Another short one, because this week, I didn’t have a lot of time for reading! I’ll more than make up for it this March, however, as I visit all of the upstate New York flower shows and report back to you. Tomorrow, off to CNY in Bloom—it’s first year in its new location—where I am lucky (and honored, and excited) to judge the competitive gardens.
Thank you as always reading Ear to the Ground PRO. —Jane
