Natural areas academy; Dan Heims in CNY; Biblical Plants; Impatiens downy mildew

by Jane Milliman on February 14, 2012

Welcome! Great to see so many of you last week at the NYSNLA Region 5 and 6 Ed Days. Region 4’s is tomorrow; you can check out the day’s lineup here.

  • One cool thing at the WNY Ed Day: This Green Screen from Mori, repped by Russell’s Tree and Shrub Farm in East Amherst. It’s narrow, relatively portable, affordable, versatile, and pretty, and it provides instant privacy and a sound barrier. Nice! Contact Russ at 716-689-6764 for wholesale pricing.
  • More from Russell’s: “Greenhouse Sales Help Wanted. Russell’s Tree and Shrub Farm LLC in East Amherst, NY is seeking a sales associate for our greenhouse sales area. Job duties include Sales, assisting the team leader in perennial and inventory maintenance of greenhouse items. Some sales assistance outside of the greenhouse will also be expected. Customer service skills and perennial knowledge are necessary. Looking for person that is driven with a passion for helping others. All resumes can be sent to [email protected]. For questions, contact Mark McLean at 716-689-6764.”
  • There will be a tree health and turf webinar March 26 sponsored by Cornell Horticulture and featuring Nina Bassuk and Frank Rossi.
  • Green Drinks Rochester: Feb. 16 (that’s THIS Thursday), 5 – 7:30 pm, American Association of University Women, 494 East Avenue.
  • Cornell Plantations Announces its 3rd Natural Areas Academy. This is such a neat little program. Sort of like a Master Gardener designation, but for the stewardship of natural areas. I love Plantations so much, I just want to move in there. Do you think they’d let me?
  • Tend the Garden, Take Root! Training Session, Buffalo. “The session is designed to assist existing youth garden programs (small or large) in developing a longer-term approach to garden-based programs in hopes of expanding existing programs that foster a commitment to yearlong food systems. The Tend the Garden session is part of a three part professional development program offered by the Cornell Garden-Based Learning called Take Root! A Training for Garden Educators.”
  • New! WNY’s National Garden Festival will now include a Garden Art Sale, Sunday June 24. Want to be a vendor? Apply here.
  • Via American Nurseryman: Ohio State University will offer a Professional Master in Plant Health Management degree.
  • What’s the scoop with downy mildew on impatiens here? I keep forgetting to ask Walt Nelson when I see him (or forget the answer, not sure which). Here’s a handy guide from Greenhouse Grower on how to scout for it. Got mildew? Know someone who does? I’d love any regional insight into this.
  • News about this new line is everywhere. Do you want to carry it? Are your customers going to care that it’s branded HGTV?
  • This story, which is about churches and synagogues attempting to grow Biblical plants, had me in stitches. First of all, if you’re refering to a young hollyhock as a sapling, you might want to get some more experience before attempting to grow your own olive oil on an 8×8 plot. Their intentions are so nice and sweet…it just cracked me up…I’m sorry…I’m a terrible person. From the Wall Street Journal; thanks to @craigyunker for the lead.
