- Here is a great opportunity for the right person: The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is looking for an interim Director of Horticulture.
- We were very saddened to hear of the loss of Cayuga Landscape’s Peter Bodycombe. You can read his obituary here.
- You may recall that last week I was frustrated at not being able to find that little bullet/terrarium pendant. A reader tracked it down. Thanks Micah!

- This story in the Democrat and Chronicle provoked a bit of a twitter rant on my part. The headline reads “Pittsford residents react to proposal for new turf stadium,” and it goes on to talk about new turf stadium this, new turf stadium that, without ever inserting the oh-so-important modifier “artificial.” I’m not without bias, of course—Batavia Turf and Lakeside Sod both have been longtime supporters of my projects, and I’m a green industry advocate. But to me, turf is turf. Sod. Grass. A plant. When I questioned the reporter on this, she (confusedly) referred me to the 101 page consultant’s proposal, which talks a lot about turf, but calls it artificial only twice, on page 49. It also uses the term “natural grass” twice, on page 41, referring to, er, turf. I’m not saying Pittsford should not install artificial turf after weighing their options. I’m just saying that they should call it what it is, and avoid confusing voters. The Brighton-Pittford Post did it right, adding the word “synthetic” all on their own.
- Maybe good. Maybe a little scary? Via @batesnursery: Amazonian Mushroom Eats Indestructible Plastics.
- Touring Rose Gardens Nude. Because people like stories about other people doing ordinary things while naked.
- Former grunge rocker Azuma Makoto makes art with plants. He does some neat work—quite varied. Click here for images. This one is entitled “Lump.”
- This is from Leaf Magazine (on twitter, @leafmag), which is new this year, totally digital, free, and really good. The classic wingback chair re-interpreted for outside style. (For $681, my dad will make you a better one.)
- Don’t miss the NYSNLA 2012 Leadership Forum in Ithaca, Oct. 24. This is the third year for this great event, offering up green industry business education and mingling on the beautiful Cornell University campus.
