Project Scion, Plant Something!, Cornell Floriculture Field Day

by Jane Milliman on June 19, 2012

Good day! I was going to make this a super short issue, a micro-issue, but reading through the material, I don’t think that’s going to happen. There are a lot of good links, so I will keep my commentary brief.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, we are working on producing the July-August Upstate Gardeners’ Journal, and there is still space left for advertising! Don’t miss your chance to reach casual and downright rabid gardeners alike. Email Jane for more info.

  • Bruce Zaretsky and Sharon Coates of Zaretsky & Associates and Pietro Furgiuele of Waterford Tilling have launched Project Scion THE ORCHARD and are calling for help to revamp a vacant lot in the City of Rochester.
  • Groupon Rumored To Test Payment Service. (Today’s Garden Center) All things being equal, I’ll stay loyal to Square, which was the first credit card processor to say, hey, guess what? You don’t have to pay big big rates just because you’re a small small business. Surprised someone didn’t tap into the frustrated small businessperson market earlier, frankly.
  • Frances & Larry Grossman of Rochester-area Grossman’s Garden & Home are speaking at the IGC Show, Chicago, August. Would still like to put together a group trip, but it might have to wait until next year.
  • A logical, non-hysterical look at how a municipality might deal with EAB. From the Chicago Tribune.
  • Plant Something! is a marketing campaign that started in Arizona and is creeping around the country. What do you think? Is it for us?
  • Cornell Floriculture Field Day is July 24th. It’s always such a fun event, and I’m one of the judges of the container competition! And you know me—I’m very judgmental. Heh. Really, though, a fun contest if you are design-y that way. It would be great to see some new contestants this year.
