Seely’s takes a break; Armitage to appear locally; Jack Frost brunnera; national plant trials database; more

  • Greenhouse Grower mag: (Cornell’s) Seeley’s Run Of 26 Straight Conferences Halted: “The annual Seeley Conference has been postponed until 2013 so the board of directors can discuss possible changes to the venue and format of floriculture’s think tank.”
  • Looks like there’s a new GARDEN CHIC mag out. You can read the highlights here. (I haven’t read it all yet—waiting for the print edition.)
  • Davey Tree has launched a new app that helps customers figure the value of their existing trees. Via Lawn & Landscape.
  • Lockwood Lavender Farm, Skaneateles, is looking for speakers for its Lavender festival 7/14 & 15. Contact Karen through her blog if you are interested.
  • Confirmed: Dr. Armitage will be in upstate New York 9/28-30. Mark those calendars. Plans include speaking engagements at Sonnenberg & FLCC—stay tuned for updates.
  • OFA and ANLA have announced a new joint venture. You can read about it here, and get further analysis from Green Profit‘s Ellen Wells here.
  • It’s not online, but if you have the latest Horticulture magazine handy, check out Bill Cullina’s piece “Gardener’s Challenge: Cold Challenged,” in which he discusses how different communities of the same plant species can exhibit differing cold tolerance. Example: Magnolia virginiana Cape Ann strain, studied by Arnold Arboretum for its remarkable cold hardiness being that it is a “southern” tree. (I must have one, because my sweetbay is rock solid!) Sounds dry the way I describe it but a great read.
  • Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ Perennial Plant of the Year™ for 2012. This should be an easy one to promote—a great plant!
