- It’s not online, but if you have the latest Horticulture magazine handy, check out Bill Cullina’s piece “Gardener’s Challenge: Cold Challenged,” in which he discusses how different communities of the same plant species can exhibit differing cold tolerance. Example: Magnolia virginiana Cape Ann strain, studied by Arnold Arboretum for its remarkable cold hardiness being that it is a “southern” tree. (I must have one, because my sweetbay is rock solid!) Sounds dry the way I describe it but a great read.
- Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ Perennial Plant of the Year™ for 2012. This should be an easy one to promote—a great plant!
- One heck of an ambitious project: The Plant Encyclopedia, a wiki that is attempting to catalog EVERY PLANT ON EARTH. I did not have time to look them all up, but every plant I checked for was indeed there. Also found this interesting Aden plant hardiness zone system/map I had not seen before.
- Here’s another ambitious, tech-y project: an on-line, GIS-based all-taxa invasive species mapping tool: iMapInvasives.
- In Cayuga County, citizens can trade their Christmas trees for a free, live replacements. (Via syracuse.com and spotted by @CornellCALS.)
