by Jane Milliman on February 29, 2012

This is a straight-up press release I’m posting here, because the details aren’t online yet.

COLD SPRING, NY: The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program for 2012 begins on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1 in Tompkins County, featuring the garden of Hitch Lyman, 3441 Krums Corners Road, Trumansburg, open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the garden is $5, the Open Day is rain or shine, and no reservations are required. Call 1-888-842-2442, or visit www.opendaysprogram.org for more information. Additional Tompkins County Open Days will take place on Saturday, May 19 at the Lyman garden; and Saturday, August 4 featuring four private gardens in Dryden and Ithaca.

Hitch Lyman’s garden features a collection of more than 400 snowdrop varieties (Galanthus) planted in the woodland as well as other early spring flowers. The 1848 Greek Revival-style farmhouse was moved to the site in 1990, and is now surrounded by lilacs, trilliums, daphnes, camassias, and orchids, which bloom later in the season.

These Open Days gardens are featured in the 2012 Open Days Directory; a soft-cover book that includes detailed driving directions and vivid descriptions written by their owners. The directory includes garden listings in nineteen states and costs $21.95 including shipping. Visit www.opendaysprogram.org or call the Garden Conservancy toll-free at 1-888-842-2442 to order with a Visa, MasterCard or American Express, or send a check or money order to: the Garden Conservancy, P.O. Box 219, Cold Spring, NY 10516. Discount admission tickets are available as well through advanced mail order.

The 2012 Open Days program is generously sponsored by Fine Gardening magazine as its National Media Sponsor. Fine Gardening magazine brings you breathtaking design ideas, helpful techniques, and the know-how to get great results in your own garden.

The Garden Conservancy introduced the Open Days program in 1995 as a means of introducing the public to gardening, providing easy access to outstanding examples of design and horticultural practice, and proving that exceptional American gardens are still being created. The Open Days program is America’s only national private garden-visiting program, and is made possible by the work of hundreds of volunteers nationwide. Visit the Garden Conservancy and its Open Days program online at www.opendaysprogram.org.
