Hello friends! It’s been a few weeks. Some of you heard from me in the interim about a new format for the e-newsletter, and I appreciate all the feedback. I hope Ear to the Ground Pro is easier to read, easier to produce, and better than ever. If you have any comments, just hit “reply” (or, if you are reading this on the blog, comment below).
Onward!
- In Upstate Gardeners’ Journal news: we were thrilled and humbled to receive, at their annual Harvest Dinner late last month, the Business of the Year award from PLANTWNY, alongside Menne Nursery’s tireless Sharon Howarth. As if this wonderful award and the attendant fabulous party weren’t enough, there was also a wild animal safari. I’m not even kidding! Thanks much to Mike Frank for scheming up this nutty adventure, and to everyone who celebrated with us. It was a blast.
- A reader sent in some pictures of our next mystery plant. I think we already have it figured out but will entertain guesses.
- Martha Stewart will keynote IGC Chicago. Big news, good or bad. Your thoughts?
- Quite sensible. As professionals, we dispense this advice all the time, but it seems like no one listens! From loud.com: Defend plants from the dry fall.
- It’s about damned time! From the Times: Rake the Leaves? Some Towns Say Mow Them.
- Also from the Times: The Magic of Witch Hazel. Aww.
- And thirdly: “The native plant movement is, in part, this Protestant idea that it has to hurt in order to do good.”
- The invasives debate rages on (and if you want to make your voice heard, attend one of the public hearings listed in EVENTS). But this little tidbit, spotted by my pal Tommy Belknap, a.k.a. “DragonFlyEye,” cracked me up. Really, Ms. Perry? Did you think this one through? Katy Perry Album Declared A Biohazard By Australian Government.
- Ever wonder who might die at the next Garden Writers symposium? No? Anyone you’d particularly like to see offed? KIDDING. But! Here’s a new mystery dealing with that very topic: “Dying for the Christmas Rose.“
- HELP WANTED: Guest services & gift shop associate, Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens.
- Today’s Garden Center says to expect some nursery stock shortages this spring.
- And finally, some timely advice (great for passing on to your customers) from one today’s best how-to garden writers, Janet Macunovich: Pruning to make great evergreens. (Michigan Gardener)
