Welcome! Thanks SO much for your support and great feedback following last week’s world domination—I mean expansion!
- We got the sad news last night that Ed Dore’s wife Barb had passed away. While not everyone in the green industry knew Barb, it’s safe to say that almost everyone (Buffalo, upstate, downstate…) knows—and loves—Ed, and that all of our hearts go out to him and his family.
- As promised, the Ball Publishing Spring Trials 2013 recap site is up and running.
- Via the American Nurseryman twitter account (@amnurseryman): It isn’t easy being a carnivorous plant. This was a fascinating article and there are numerous related links posted there as well. A carnivorous plant rabbit hole, if you will.
- Fires, drinking and sex noises (or maybe bullfrogs—it’s hard to say). Oh my! The New York Times does it again with this hilarious account of garden club intrigue on Roosevelt Island.
- Also from the Times, impatiens downy mildew hits the mainstream press with this piece by Ann Raver: A Pox on Your Flowers.
- More on impatiens alternatives and a downloadable bench sheet from Green Profit.
- Via Dwell, check out the American Society of Landscape Architects New York 2013 Design Awards.
- Greenhouse Grower sees potential for independents in “quirky” petunia colors seen at Spring Trials.
- Millions of cicadas are returning after 17-year sleep to mate. Yikes. The Wall Street Journal (via NPR) says that historically, this means a stock market boon.
- Susan Maney will return to Rochester to head up the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (via RBJ).
- From the Buffalo News, money earmarked for a world-class park on the Niagara River has been spent elsewhere.
SCHOLARSHIPS
- New Richard T. Meister Scholarship Supports Research: $2,500 scholarship will be awarded annually to support graduate floriculture research at land-grant universities.
- From Syngenta, two scholarships, $7500 each: one to a student of the business of ornamental horticulture, and one to a student of plant breeding. Undergrad, master’s, and doctoral level study all considered.
