Good morning! Lots to report.
First off, great honor to pals Ed Dore, Sally Cunningham and Donna Moramarco at this year’s NYSNLA award, given out at the New York State Fair — PLUS the Flanders Group and lots of landscape award winners. Details are here. In the images below, Cunningham awarded CNLP of the year, Ed Dore receives the George L. Good Gold Medal of Horticulture, Donna Moramarco is inducted into the CNLP Hall of Fame, and The Flanders Group is honored for 20 years of partnership with the association. That large group of people standing at the podium is comprised totally of NYSNLA past presidents (well, and Dale Tuttle, current president)—an impressive group!
- New York State has expanded its quarantine on ash wood in 42 counties to fight emerald ash borer.
- This is a great little article about apples, and it left me feeling kind of smug, because in New York State, we have many of the varieties mentioned in the trade, and quite a few that aren’t mentioned!
- Thanks to Billy Goodnick for this one, who commented: “Can’t think of many higher uses for plants.” Indeed not!
- I love Field Day at Cornell, but usually it’s too damned HOT! This year, perfect weather. Check out the winners of the Kathy Pufahl container competition! If you are interested in learning more about that, attend my talk this January at the RCGC Seed Swap.
- Always want to get to the IGC Show in Chicago but never seem to make it that far west? Good news: There’s a sister show coming to DC! Speaking of which, check out these neat finds from this year’s show — from the folks at Green Profit.
- Cute jewelry, but I wish they were living plants. And the one piece looks like brass knuckles. Still!
- These things always a crap shoot And by the way, why is the insect referred to with proper scientific nomenclature but the plant is just “mile-a-minute vine”? I don’t like that one bit. It’s Persicaria perfoliata. From the New York Times: Urgent Task for Insect: Stop Relentless Vine.
- Know someone interested in a career in the green industry? Several industry groups have banded together to create this slick site meant to guide students, parents, and school-types. Point her to it! (Learned about this during a NYSNLA visit to SUNY Morrisville; see student poinsettia crop below.)
- Glad I don’t live in Texas. Police Hit Organic Farm With Massive SWAT Raid (from the Huffington Post).
- Someone please steal these great in-store display ideas. From Today’s Garden Center.
- To heck with the Wanamaker Trophy. Dufner took ACORNS back to Auburn! Sweet!
Here’s a great opportunity: The Tree Care Industry Association reports one of its members is looking for a female climber to speak at the Great Plains Conference in Nebraska this January. Email Jim at [email protected].
