Hello all, and Happy Holidays! Thanks, as always, for reading Ear to the Ground Pro.
- Sad news from Western New York: Former PLANTWNY President and Man of the Year Ken Stoddard died earlier this month.
- Here’s a fun game. I missed two (and was pretty displeased with myself, but super-excited to get the first one right (pictured below), as I just learned it this fall). You? Judging a Tree by Its Cover–A Bark Quiz.
- The WNY Nurserymen’s Foundation (of PLANTWNY) is offering two scholarships this year.
- Also from PLANTWNY: Congrats to Tom Mitchell (middle) for his recent honor from Niagara County Community College. He received the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award for the Science, Health, and Mathematics Division.
- And a last bit of news from the very busy PLANYWNY: Member firm Serene Gardens, whose principal Matt Smith (pictured below) is Green Profit’s Young Retailer of the Year, is expanding their restaurant business into Buffalo proper—Elmwood Village, to be precise. Here’s a little bit more about Serene Gardens’s food from our friends at Buffalo Spree. Smith will be speaking at the GFLNLA Ed Day on February 4.
- “Imagine gardening as something fun.” Because, you know, without firearms everything’s real drag. Honestly, the promo copy for this new product is even better than the idea itself: shotgun shells full of seed (and gunpowder!) you can use to sow a whole field of … whatever. People are buying it, too: The Indiegogo campaign was completely funded.
- Wonderful. And, of course, quite similar to Rochester’s own GardenAerial. This beautiful proposed garden bridge over the Thames could become the world’s next elevated park.
- A truly fascinating practice: The Many Benefits of Hugelkultur.
- Love Hortideas? It’s no longer being published, but you can get all years on CD for $42.
- And finally, just for fun, some student projects from Cornell’s Fall 2013 Art of Horticulture class.
EMPLOYMENT
- Northeast IMP Center Director Carrie Koplinka-Loehr retires in June. Her position is posted here.
- Rochester-area’s Broccolo Garden Center is looking for a nursery manager and a store manager. This application works when applying for either position.
