Welcome NYSNLA Members; Spring Trials News; Social Networks for the Green Industry

by Jane Milliman on April 13, 2013

Good morning! I’m super-duper excited to report today that the New York State Nursery and Landscape Association is now officially endorsing Ear to the Ground. If this is your first issue, welcome. On to the news.

As you are probably aware, the spring trials just wrapped up in California. I was terribly sad not to be there, but we have the next best thing: ace reporters. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Walt Nelson sent some images in (I’ve been posting them to facebook) and Ball Publishing’s Chris Beytes and Ellen Wells do an amazing job in their daily “Acres of Buzz” enewsletter. I won’t bother to reinvent the wheel, but will simply point you directly to their news: springtrials.com. PLEASE NOTE that this site will NOT contain 2013’s information until Monday, April 12. Today’s Garden Center posted some interesting previews, as well, of annuals, perennials, and edibles to watch for. Greenhouse Product News has a great Trials image gallery here. Scroll down for blog posts.

I’m im love with two new petunias: ‘Crazytunia Terracotta’ is one.

And ‘Cascadia Indian Summer’ is the other.

I’ll try to add some more discoveries as I wade through all of the info.

Garden app wrap up: A Garden of Delights, Mapped Out in Your Hand from the New York Times.

Also from the Times:

New stamps! I love new stamps! These beauties will be out soon. Stock up.

Your customers will love this: Pollinator Partnership-Pollinator Friendly Planting Guide. (I also highly recommend Sally Cunningham’s “Great Garden Companions.”)

I’m a huge fan of Square, and to all of the credit card processers who ripped everyone off for such a long time and now want to be like Square, I say, “Nyeh.” Now Square has a little kit you can buy that includes a receipt printer for those customers that just have to have paper, and a cash drawer. Super-handy.

The Ithacanran a nice review of the recent Ithaca Native Plant Symposium.

From Landscape Leadership by way of Today’s Garden Center: 11 Most Important Social Networks for the Green Industry. I highly recommend taking a look at this infographic. (If you have no idea what any of it means, call me. I can help.)

Also from TGC: The Top 10 Most Hated Gardening Trends.

I had a sneak peek at the Cornell Plantations fall lecture series lineup and it is going to rock. I’m excited to see Bill Hendricks, Lee Reich, and other great plant minds. I’ll post the schedule when it’s finalized.

Save the date: October 24, 2013—annual NYSNLA Leadership Forum at Cornell. Here’s a link to lots more association events, both state and regional.
