8:00 Featured Speaker Dr. Shawn C. Kenaley a Visiting Fellow in School of Integrative Plant Science, Cornell University, Life’s a Beech: Bleeding Canker and its Control on European Beech 

Discussing Phytophthora – one of the most ecologically and economically damaging plant pathogens of herbaceous and woody plants. With increasing frequency since the mid-1980s, disease caused by at least five Phytophthora species has been associated with the mortality of countless mature European beech (Fagus sylvatica) (>100 yr-old) in arboreta, public gardens, and private landscapes in NYS and elsewhere in the Northeast. In this session Dr. Kenaley will review the symptoms of bleeding canker, examine the epidemiological factors permitting spread and intensification of disease, and discuss chemical control options in disease management. It will include discussion of NY field studies, including findings related to the effectiveness of phosphite fungicide(s) on eradicating Phytophthora spp.
