IDM update; diploid tip blight; new thoughts on invasives

by Jane Milliman on October 27, 2014

Good morning! We are going to press UGJ Holiday issue (it is hoped); let me know if you want to squeeze in an ad.

  • Monroe County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension will vacate its digs and move to a renovated farm house in Seneca Park, near the zoo. No one wants to see CCE leave 249 Highland Ave., but the truth is that the responsibilities of and the funding for Extension have been dwindling for years, and their current facility is underused. Rumor has it that once the building is razed, the county hopes to erect a pavilion in its place to rent out for events.
  • Hooey or a True Hazard? Cornell CALS’s Marge Daughtry weighs in on Impatiens Downy Mildew for Green Profit‘s BUZZ. Short answer: Don’t bother. Redirect your customers to suitable alternatives.
  • Question for you all: What are you recommending to replace pines felled by Diplodia Tip Blight? Three in front of my house were taken out today. The general consensus seems to be the seemingly bullet-proof Norway spruce, but aren’t we setting ourselves up for trouble by creating yet another monoculture?
