Congratulations to Our 2014 Gold Medal and CNLP of the Year Recipients and Our 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee!

We are pleased to announce the names of those receiving NYSNLA’s highest annual honors for 2014.

The 2014 George L. Good Gold Medal of Horticulture recipient is Steven Perry, Assistant Principal of Agriculture of John Bowne High School in Flushing, New York. Steve has built the agriculture program at John Bowne High School into something spectacular that the entire state can be proud of, including such timely topics as aquaculture, hydroponics, large animals, aviculture and exotic animals and has been honored for his teaching skills on both state and national levels. We are very proud to present the Gold Medal to Steve for raising the standard of agriculture education and for instilling a love of horticulture into students from a young age.

We are equally proud to announce our 2014 Hall of Fame inductee is Michael Grimm, Senior Lifetime CNLP. A past president, Michael has been a tireless supporter of NYSNLA, the Nurserymen’s Foundation and the landscape industry. He epitomizes the qualities we look for when choosing a Hall of Fame inductee.

Finally, we are proud to announce that our 2014 CNLP of the Year is Region 6’s Kim Schichtel. Kim has worked endless hours on programs in her region, promoting both the CNLP program and NYSNLA events, and is an advocate for volunteerism in the program. She has attracted others through her enthusiasm and love for the industry. Kim is a standard to which we hope other CNLPs will hold themselves and we look forward to honoring her for her achievements.

All are welcome to join us for the award ceremony in the NYSNLA Court of Honor at the John Deere Horticulture Building on Opening Day of the New York State Fair, Thursday, August 21, 2014. Full bios of our winners will be featured in August on the NYSNLA website and in the Fall issue of Nursery Lines.

Our annual Leadership Forum at Cornell University will be followed by our Annual Membership Dinner, the Nurserymen’s Foundation Auction and our 2014 Environmental Beautification Awards! The day provides a great opportunity for leadership-level professional development, as well as an excellent opportunity for sponsors. Ourkeynote speaker, Tony Bass, will discuss “Creating Employee Systems for Success.”

We are also proud to announce New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball plans to join us at lunch to share his thoughts on the state of the industry.

That evening, we’ll gather for our annual dinner at the Hotel Ithaca (formerly Holiday Inn) andhonor our 2014 Environmental Beautification Award winners. A highlight of the annual dinner is the Nurserymen’s Foundation Auction, which raises funds to support NYSNLA education programs. The Foundation Board will soon be reaching out for donations for this year’s auction. Let us know if you have an item to contribute!
