It’s another snowy Thursday! But tomorrow is supposed to be close to 50 degrees. I have enjoyed this storm very much, because my brother, visiting from Buffalo, got stranded here with us. It has felt like Christmas.
- More sad news from the Rochester area this week: Jim Tanner is dead at the age of 41.
- You know you do this.
- In 1956, RG&E’s Russell Station, on the shores of Lake Ontario, was named “The World’s Most Beautiful Utility” by the American Association of Nurserymen. It is now slated for demolition.
- This new online tool tracks global deforestation in “near” real time.
- Two short term opportunities in IPM research, Buffalo:
WNY PRISM Stewardship Assistants – A Sponsored Program of The Research Foundation for SUNY
WNY PRISM Education and Outreach Assistant – A Sponsored Program of The Research Foundation for SUNY - From Wired: “These Mad Scientists Want to Replace Solar Panels With Potted Plants.“
- Clean Sweep NY is coming up soon in WNY. Schools, licensed pesticide applicators, and farmers can dispose of their unwanted chemicals by registering in advance. This program is not available to homeowners.
- Quite the shuffle in the Rochester-area hardscape biz as of late: Sensenig’s is taking over the Landmasters location on Buffalo Road (formerly Harris Seed), and Joey Degnan has left Miller Brick to manage that site. S. J. Green will fill Degnan’s vacancy, defecting from Norther Nurseries. Best of luck to all involved.
- For those that missed it the first time, please take a guess at this issue’s mystery plant in the Upstate Gardeners’ Journal (page 9). We already have a winner, but it’s always fun to play!
