RIP Jim Tanner; Clean Sweep in WNY; more

by Jane Milliman on March 13, 2014

It’s another snowy Thursday! But tomorrow is supposed to be close to 50 degrees. I have enjoyed this storm very much, because my brother, visiting from Buffalo, got stranded here with us. It has felt like Christmas.

  • In 1956, RG&E’s Russell Station, on the shores of Lake Ontario, was named “The World’s Most Beautiful Utility” by the American Association of Nurserymen. It is now slated for demolition.

  • Clean Sweep NY is coming up soon in WNY. Schools, licensed pesticide applicators, and farmers can dispose of their unwanted chemicals by registering in advance. This program is not available to homeowners.
  • Quite the shuffle in the Rochester-area hardscape biz as of late: Sensenig’s is taking over the Landmasters location on Buffalo Road (formerly Harris Seed), and Joey Degnan has left Miller Brick to manage that site. S. J. Green will fill Degnan’s vacancy, defecting from Norther Nurseries. Best of luck to all involved.
  • For those that missed it the first time, please take a guess at this issue’s mystery plant in the Upstate Gardeners’ Journal (page 9). We already have a winner, but it’s always fun to play!
