Hello there. Lots of news and great links this week (skipped last week due to magazine production) including two deaths: Chris McVicker, founder of The Flanders Group, a longtime ally of our industry statewide, and Harry Newman, past president of what is now PLANT WNY. Services for Newman have already occurred, but there will be a Celebration of Life held for McVicker on March 4th at Locust Hill Country Club, 2000 Jefferson Road, Pittsford, from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. His obituary will run this weekend in the D&C.
- I just can’t stop looking at this image of ivy coming off a wall.
- Here is a great story about CY Farms, sister company to our generous sponsor Batavia Turf. If you’ve never seen the entire operation in action, take a moment to read the article. It’s a remarkably well-integrated enterprise.
- New York City could grow all its own food. But is it really practical? From the Smithsonian.
- Nice little story about Miller Brick in the Rochester D&C last week.
A few from the New York Times:
- If you’re interested in botanical history, check out “Like Columbus, It Floated Here,” a study of how the bottle gourd reached the Americas.
- “Miracle-Gro Wants More People to Try Their Hand at Gardening” examines the company’s very new, very nontraditional ad campaign.
- We usually think of dangerous border crossings from Mexico as having to do with drugs or illegal immigrants (a friend of mine smuggled over a street puppy over once), but when cut flowers surge the States, as they did a few weeks ago for Valentine’s Day, officials worry about bugs and diseases: “A Closer Look at Valentine’s Flowers.”
- What, these lush, fat, terrestrial lady’s slippers? Uh, yes, yes they would.” Would these orchids be of interest to you?“
- These beautiful new stamps will be available soon! I always appreciate being able to buy horticulture-related stamps at the Post Office.
- Greenhouse Grower: The OFA Short Course is now Cultivate ’14.
- Check out this 34 million old Fagopsis, an oak/beech tree. Neat.
- Educators: Check out this idea (if you don’t already do it, that it.) From Garden Center: Floral plant giveaway aims to boost student horticulture program enrollment.
